PhD Completion Roadmap
A lot of PhD students are not stuck because they have not done enough. They are stuck because they have done a lot without a structure that gets them to the end. The PhD Completion Roadmap gives graduate schools and doctoral programmes that missing structure — a clear path from where their researchers are now to a submitted, defended thesis.
The Roadmap has two parts that work together. The first is a focused four-workshop series, which can be opened up to a wider cohort and optionally extended with supervision between sessions. The second is a curated six- or twelve-month high-touch programme for individual PhD candidates — ideal for scholarship and fellowship holders — that combines membership in the EMERGE Scholars Collective Support Room with monthly one-to-one coaching from Melanie. Institutions can book either part on its own, but the two are designed to fit together.
For: Graduate schools, doctoral programmes, research offices, and scholarship / fellowship providers supporting PhD candidates to completion.

How it's delivered
Workshop series
Four workshops that move doctoral researchers from a stuck middle stage to a clear, realistic plan for submission. Each session is built around exercises participants can apply immediately to their own thesis. Well-suited to opening up to a wider cohort of PhD candidates across the institution.
Workshop series with supervision
The same four-workshop series, with structured supervision between sessions. Participants get feedback on the work they produce in each workshop and stay accountable across the full programme.
High-touch coaching programme (6 or 12 months)
A curated programme for individual PhD candidates — often funded through writing-up scholarships, completion fellowships, or graduate school stipends. Each participant gets full access to the EMERGE Scholars Collective Support Room and monthly one-to-one coaching with Melanie, billed as a monthly retainer per candidate.

6 Reasons You're in Year 6 of Your PhD and Still Have No Clear Plan
Many doctoral researchers stay stuck for much longer than they expected — not because they are not working, but because the work they are doing is no longer moving them toward submission. We look at six common reasons PhD students struggle to finish and what can be done about them. The central exercise is a reverse planning exercise: participants set a realistic submission date and work backwards to the present, breaking the final phase into manageable stages and milestones.
Participants leave with: A realistic month-by-month submission plan based on a clear target date, plus a better understanding of what is currently blocking progress.
- Workshop 2
Working on the Dissertation, Not Just in It
One of the biggest reasons PhD students get stuck is that they spend too much time rewriting text without stepping back to look at the dissertation as a whole. This workshop focuses on the architecture of the thesis: what it is actually contributing, what kind of argument it is making, and what organising principle should hold it together. Participants clarify the argument or contribution, then choose or refine an organising principle for the thesis as a whole.
Participants leave with: A clearer statement of the dissertation's argument or contribution, plus an organising principle that guides the structure and reduces unnecessary rewriting.
- Workshop 3
Revising Chapters Effectively
Many PhD students keep revising without ever knowing when a chapter is actually finished. This workshop introduces a clear hierarchy of revision — from argument and structure down to paragraphs and sentences — so that participants stop solving problems at the wrong level. We also discuss how to work with feedback strategically, how to distinguish meaningful revision from perfectionist overworking, and which editing tools are useful at the final stages.
Participants leave with: A revision framework participants can apply to their own chapters, stronger criteria for deciding when a chapter is ready to share, and a clearer route from endless rewriting to meaningful completion.
- Workshop 4
Submission, Defence, and What Comes After
The last stage of the PhD brings up new fears and new decisions. This workshop addresses both sides of the final stretch: preparing for the defence and thinking seriously about what comes next. Participants brainstorm likely objections and critical questions and work on strong, thoughtful responses; they also use a structured reflection and an adapted ikigai exercise to sketch a Plan A and Plan B for life after the PhD.
Participants leave with: Prepared responses to likely defence questions, plus a first draft of a Plan A and Plan B for the post-PhD phase.
