Why You Don't Need to Be "Ready" to Return to Your Academic Writing

Why You Don't Need to Be "Ready" to Return to Your Academic Writing

Last Monday, we held our monthly planning session in the EMERGE Scholars Collective, and for many members, the timing couldn't have been better.

Some had been sick (hello, autumn viruses), others had just returned from conferences, and many were feeling overwhelmed by the start of the semester. What became clear during our check-in was this: This wasn't just a routine planning session. It was a reset.

And sometimes, a reset is exactly what your academic writing needs. But it's not always easy to create that kind of momentum on your own.

The Power of an Academic Writing Group

One of the quiet strengths of being part of a co-writing group is that you don't have to rely on your own motivation. You don't need to be "ready." You don't need the perfect plan. You just need to show up.

The structure and the academic peer group do the heavy lifting until your own energy catches up.

We always end our planning sessions with a short reflection. This time, we journaled on questions like:

  • What gave me energy last month?
  • What drained it?
  • Where am I spending energy that doesn't actually move me forward?
  • How can I reduce contact with energy-draining tasks, environments, or people?

One member sent me a note afterwards:

Again, really good stuff to reflect on, especially regarding my energy balance.

That line stayed with me. Because in academic life, it's not just about setting goals. It's about protecting the conditions that make progress possible.

Writing Is Easier When You're Not Doing It Alone

If you've fallen out of rhythm with your writing, or if you're feeling behind, stuck, or unsure how to begin again, consider this your invitation to pause. Instead of trying to figure it all out on your own, start with support.

  • Start with structure
  • Start with a space that welcomes you back
  • Start with a co-writing community that meets you where you are

Academic Writing Needs Consistency, Not Perfection

Many of us still hold the belief that academic writing requires long stretches of uninterrupted time. But the truth is, real progress often happens in short, focused sessions — especially when you're not doing it alone.

That's what the EMERGE Scholars Collective is all about. It's not about pushing through or getting everything right. It's about showing up, week after week, and creating a practice that supports your writing and your well-being.

The best day to start writing again was yesterday. The second-best is today.
